Description of the Situation

Users experience difficulties when using the search function inside Wikipedia. This page is intended to help users understand how the search system works and how to find the desired document.

How It Works

The MediaWiki engine uses SQL-based Fulltext search.
During the search process, only page titles and their content are indexed. The search operation compares and contrasts data across database tables (page, text, searchindex).

Weaknesses of the internal Wiki search:
  1. The search does not support morphology, typos, or synonyms.
  2. It is highly sensitive to word forms.

How to Search
